SA talent shines brilliantly at kykNET Silwerskerm Awards for Film and TV

The kykNET Silwerskerm Awards for Film and TV were presented during a spectacular gala event on Saturday 31 August at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC). The event will be broadcast on Sunday 1 September at 20:00 on kykNET (DStv channel 144).

Actors, presenters and personalities who produced outstanding entertainment on kykNET’s channels between 1 April 2023 and 31 March 2024, were honoured with the coveted Silwerskerm statues.

Legends in the entertainment industry were also acknowledged. Hans Strydom, who has left an indelible mark on Afrikaans feature films since 1973, and currently portrays the patriarch At Koster in Binnelanders, and the versatile Denise Newman, known for her iconic role as Bridgette in Suidooster, were honoured with lifetime achievement awards. TV producer Roberta Durrant also received an award for her life-long contribution to the industry.

“Film and TV are like two chambers of kykNET’s heart,” says Waldimar Pelser, M-Net Channel Director: Premium Channels. “The one can’t be prosperous without the other. To combine these two commercial artistic disciplines at an awards ceremony is not only fantastic, but also imperative.

“It brings great satisfaction to see how many Afrikaans content creators are involved in both art forms – filmmakers who produce TV and vice versa. Its success takes our industry forward. It is important to acknowledge everybody who performs miracles on screen with very limited resources.”

This year, kykNET also celebrates 25 years of providing entertainment to the Afrikaans market. In a quarter of a century, the channel has – like biltong and rusks – become part and parcel of many households.

Waldimar describes TV as teamwork of the highest order, and he praises kykNET’s partners whom he regards as masters in the crafts of storytelling, cinematography, business plans, investigative work, entertainment and problem solving. “In our 25th year, we are deeply grateful for the time, ideas, attention to detail, and the love we share with our viewers. Thank you for building kykNET with us.”

The awards ceremony was a magnificent affair, an event seldomly seen on such a scale in South Africa. On 1 September at 20:00, kykNET subscribers will be able to watch the winners, the designer outfits that made the stars shine event brighter, and they can share in all the dramatic moments of uninhibited joy.
