Rian van Heerden and Landmyn among the big winners at the Silwerskerm Awards for Film and TV
Television presenter Rian van Heerden was called to the stage three times on the evening of Saturday 22 August to receive Silwerskerm statuettes, while the feature film Landmyn made a clean sweep of four headline categories in competition with two other feature films.
The glamorous kykNET Silwerskerm Awards for Film and TV at the Cape Town International Convention Centre was a true celebration of the talent of actors, TV presenters, and filmmakers in the Afrikaans film and television industry. Actor Ivan Abrahams and comedy genius Willie Esterhuizen were also honoured for their lifetime contributions to the entertainment industry. The legendary filmmaker Koos Roets received his honorary award on Saturday morning at The Bay Hotel.
Waldimar Pelser, Director for Premium Channels at MultiChoice, a Canal+ company, says it is now more important than ever to recognise the standouts in an industry that daily enriches viewers’ lives, challenges them, keeps them in touch with the world around them and above all entertains them. “I am astounded every year by the collective creative power that exists in the Afrikaans industry and the diverse ways in which it finds expression.”
According to Pelser, kykNET will continue to offer quality programmes on the small screen — from current affairs and reality programmes to soap operas, drama, and comedy. “Where Nico Scheepers excelled last year with his horror film Hen, Landmyn will cause a stir in an entirely different way. It is a relationship drama in which he and the outstanding cast prove how unsettling a small gesture can be.”
